Seval
After the success of "vel" which was directed by Hari in 2007 his another film "Seval" has been released as a diwali treat to all of his fans. Normally movies are referred to or identified by naming the star in them. Hari is one of the few directors who are a brand in themselves. He delivers his all films with sentiment rural action and family oriented subjects. This has been liked by the audience. "Seval" is expected to be along the same line. Does Hari retains his name in "Seval"?
The film opens in 2008 with Murugesan (Bharat) coming out of jail, and the flashback begins at Sivasailam village in southern Tamilnadu and tells the story of the protagonist from1989 to 1991.
Murugesan is a vagabond who is not serious in life and spends most of his time loitering around with his uncle Thapal Thangavel (Vadivel), the village postman. His father (Rajesh) is a hardworking wholesale flower seller who has his own flower garden.
One day Murugesan meets Parijatam (Poonam Bajwa) a beautiful Brahmin girl and daughter of the local temple priest (Y.G Mahendran) and falls for her. Parijatam has been brought up by her elder sister Gayathri (Simran) who marries a guy (Prem) chosen by her father.
At the same time there is local feudal landlord and village head (Sampath), who has an eye on Parijatham, which leads to a conflict with Murugesan, who has now turned a new leaf to win over his girl!
Meanwhile after delivery Gayathri suffering from cancer dies leaving Parijatham holding the baby. The orthodox Brahmin Agraharam relatives and friends force her to marry her brother-in-law!
On a parallel track, a heart broken Murugesan tries to save her from a lusting relative (Krishna) and the village head. Want to hear more of this dumb story?
The film just drives you crazy, and story telling itself is confusing with a lot of plot holes. At times it is hard to tell what the film is about, though it is very predictable at every turn as Hari has taken certain scenes and situations from his earlier films!
Bharath manages to deliver his best. Seems to be improving movie after movie, he gets his act right. He plays a happy-go-lucky-youngster in the first half and his transformation as an angry young man for a cause in the latter half deserves a special mention.
Poonam Bajwa does her job well, while Simran manages to leave an impact in her comeback. She oozes with right energy in the movie.
Vadivelu has a major screen space as he comes almost all through the film. He is a major relief in the movie evoking laughter at several places where the screenplay starts to lag.
G V Prakash's songs don’t strike any magic on screen.
"Seval" can be enjoyed in parts.
