76 killed 110 injured in night long Mumbai terrorist attacks
Mumbai, Nov 27: At least 76 people, including nine foreigners and 11 policemen, were killed and 250 others wounded when terrorists went on a shooting spree in ten places, mostly south Mumbai, last night.
Unconfirmed reports, however, put the toll at 82, including four terrorists, who were gunned down in police and commando operations.
Even as the city was waking after a shocking nightmare, combined operations by the Army, Navy and commandoes of the National Security Guards were on at the two five star hotels -- The Taj Palace and the Trident -- where terrorists were holding nearly 60 people as hostages.
The more than a century old landmark hotel, Taj Mahal, was set on fire by the terrorists, who were currently holed up in the fifth floor of the building.
Throughout the night, a constant vigil was on and exchange of fire continued between the forces and terrorists and in one such instance, two terrorists were killed and a commando was injured.
While the city police also lost three of its elite officers, including Anti Terrorist Chief Hemant Karkare, Encounter Specialist Vijay Salaskar and Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamthe, Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 1 Nagare Patil was seriously injured and admitted to hospital. Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told reporters that there was no specific intelligence input available about the activities of the terrorists.
He said the situation at the Taj Mahal hotel is the worst with 200 NSG commandoes on their way to the encounter site.
The state government has also declared a holiday for schools and colleges today, while five columns of the Army have been called out to bring the situation under control.
The local train services on the Central Railway, meanwhile, resumed after being suspended for more than eight hours after terrorists opened fire at the station at 2200 hrs last night.
The situation at the Taj Mahal hotel continued to be a source of worry with more than 300 people, mostly foreigners, rescued from the hotel. The terrorists, however, continued to lay seize there.
The dome and the top floor of the famous hotel continued to burn even as the fire brigade personnel were still trying to douse the flames.
Police sources also told UNI that five terrorists have been killed, while nine others nailed.
It is beleived that the Deccan Mujahideen, a sleeper cell of Indian Mujahideen, which had carried out several blasts in the country, has claimed responsibiilty for the attack.
