New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 2: A day after he made unsavoury remark against the family of slain NSG commando Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today drew flak from all major political parties with the Congress demanding an apology and his own party expressing regret for the episode.
Denouncing the distasteful remarks of Kerala Chief Minister, the Congress demanded an apology from him in the spirit of the nation.
''We condemn the letter and spirit of such observations," AICC spokesman Abishek Manu Singhvi told mediapersons, while referring to the reported remarks of Mr Achuthanandan that ''not even a dog would have visited the house (of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan) had it not been that of a martyr.'' He said such insensitivity was alien to the Congress which always bowed down to every public sentiment and respected it.
"Certainly in the case of martyrs, nothing is more condemnable than the observations of Mr Achuthanandan." The Chief Minister's own party CPI(M) expressed ''regret'' for the episode amid demands of apology from him for his utterances.
''Certain remarks made by V S Achuthanandan are regrettable,'' party General Secretary Prakash Karat said in Jaipur.
In a statement issued here, Mr Karat said he had spoken to the Chief Minister over phone from Rajasthan following television reports about his remarks.
''He has assured that he had no other intention but to go to the home of Sandeep Unnikrishnan to pay homage and condole with the family,'' Mr Karat said.
On the other hand, the BJP maintained that such statements did not befit the position held by the Chief Minister, with Railway Minister Lalu Prasad going a step ahead and asking for the CM's resignation.
Stating that such harsh words did not befit the position held by the Chief Minister, the BJP disapproved of the unparliamentary language used by Mr Achuthanandan.
When asked, BJP General Secretary Arun Jaitley said, ''One has to be sensitive to the psyche of members of the family who lost their only son for the sake of the country. We have always maintained that the use of words and expressions have to be dignified.'' He added the party had distanced itself from the statements of its Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi for his comments that the women wearing lipsticks and powder were directing their anger against politicians.
He said some women activists, who held demonstrations in front of the BJP headquarters, should also agitate before the Kerala House to lodge their protest against the defiant Chief Minister.
